March 2015 - £14 million now available to farmers for water and woodlands

02 March 2015

(Information taken from the DEFRA press release of 25 February 2015)

The first grants have opened up under the new Rural Development Programme for England.

Environment Minister, Dan Rogerson, announced on 25th February that Natural England would accept applications for Water Capital Grants from 2 March. Further information about how to apply is covered on our Grant schemes pages found under the Agricultural heading.

Providing £10 million worth of government funding to the farm industry, these grants will fund new projects to reduce the impact agriculture can have on water quality.

This announcement was made a week after applications were invited for Woodland Capital Grants. Farmers, land managers and foresters are encouraged to apply for grants, worth a total of £4 million to create new woodland, while protecting existing forests and restoring tree health.

These grants are just one part of the wider Countryside Stewardship Scheme that will see millions of pounds worth of investment to help farmers and land managers protect the environment.

Schemes can include building a roof to cover livestock and divert rain water or creating a fenced area for cattle to drink, preventing contamination of watercourses with the government funding up to half the cost depending on location.

The Water and Woodland Capital Grants make up the first phase of the Countryside Stewardship Scheme. Set to be rolled out in full later in the summer, Countryside Stewardship will commit around £900m to benefitting the environment over the next six years which will include initiatives such as restoring hedges and improving water quality.

Latest English Housing Survey for 2013-2014 Release

27 February 2015

The Government has just released the latest English Housing Survey for 2013-14 which shows, for the first time that the majority of owner occupiers own their homes outright without a mortgage.

However overall ownership has fallen to a 29 year low particularly in the 25 -34 yr old owner occupiers. Ten years ago 59% of that age category owned their home, which has gone down from 36% since 2013- 2014. 14.3 million households or just under two thirds of the 22.6 million total either own their own home outright or with a mortgage.

For the first time in over 30 years most owner occupation households are now mortgage free with 7.4 million households being outright owners with 6.9 million as mortgagees. In the rental sector 19% (4.4 million) of households in 2013- 2014 were rented privately up from 18% in 2012-2013 and 11% in 2003 with a proportion of households renting social housing at 17% (3.9 million).

There was an increase in the number of households aged 25 – 34 yrs renting privately in 2013- 2014 at 48% from 45% in 2012-2013 which is double number in that age group from 2003 – 2004 at 21%.
