October Key Dates

Back to news

Harvest is up, and autumn is definitely on its way, here are some key dates to keep you compliant in the upcoming months.

1st October: From this date you can burn heather, rough grass, bracken, gorse or vaccinium on land in upland areas.

1st October is also the start of closed period for applying organic manure with a high readily available nitrogen content (e.g slurry, poultry manures or liquid digested sewage sludge) to tillage land on soils which are not shallow or sandy.

Any EFA cover crops must also be established by 1st October (and retained until at least 15th January 2019) and any EFA catch crops must be retained until at least 14th October.

The 15th October sees the start of closed period for applying organic manure with a high readily available nitrogen content (e.g slurry, poultry manures, or liquid digested sewage sludge) to grassland on soils which are not shallow or sandy.

And finally, 31st October, if you hold a summer water abstraction licence (authorising abstraction wholly within the months of April to October), the Environment Agency will make actual abstraction return forms available to you from 31st October. You then have 28 days to send your readings to the Environment Agency.
